Eugene M. Getchell III, 71 SMYRNA - Eugene M. Getchell III, 71, of Smyrna, passed away at home on Nov. 5, 2009, after a lengthy illness. Born in West Newbury, Mass., son of Eugene M. Getchell, Jr. and Rachael Trask (Bartlett) he received a Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Massachusetts where he met Jane, his wife of 40 years. They moved to Austin, Texas, where Gene earned a Masters of Library Science degree from the University of Texas, designed the house that he and his wife built there, and where their three children were born. Gene and his family lived in Durham, N.C., and Lithonia, Ga., before settling for 14 years Iowa City, Iowa. There, Gene enjoyed a successful career as a computer systems analyst for the University of Iowa Libraries. After retiring, Gene moved to Delaware, back to the east coast and the ocean his wife loves so much. Gene enjoyed cooking for family and friends and was an avid reader and captivating storyteller. He had a gorgeous bass-baritone voice and sang in choral groups in four states. In addition to his wife, Gene is survived by his three children, Nina Getchell Kosiewicz of Rockville, Va., Samuel Getchell of Philadelphia, Pa., and Carrie Campbell of Petersberg, Va.; a grandson, Benjamin Kosiewicz; a brother, Charles Getchell of Woolrich, Pa.; a sister, Mariellen Vogel of Mantua, N.J., and the Matuszeks of Malvern, Pa., who are family in spirit. Family and friends are invited to visit with the family on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 2:30 p.m. at the Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 West Commerce Street in Smyrna. A memorial service will follow at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.
