JACKSON, N.J. - Eugene Harold Mercer, Jr. of Jackson, New Jersey, formerly of Dover, Delaware, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2020. Mr. Mercer was born November 4, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Eugene Harold Mercer, MD and Louise Elizabeth Hangsterfer Mercer.
He graduated from St. Joseph's University, Philadelphia, Pa. in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He served in the United States Army Reserves/SSGT for seven years. Mr. Mercer retired in 2005 after 47 years of working for Playtex/General Foods/Clairol/Warner Lambert/Nabisco/AT&T in Transportation focusing in Finance. He also served as a Eucharistic Minister for St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Jackson, N.J. and volunteered for St. Joseph's Church in Mendham, N.J. Mr. Mercer was a member of the Chamber of Commerce as Pageant Director (1961 Miss Delaware) and was on the St. Joseph's University Baseball Team. He was very devoted to his beloved wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Theodore Mercer.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Clara Elizabeth Hurd Mercer of Jackson, N.J.; children, Christopher Joseph Mercer of Howell, N.J., Suzanne Louise Cederlund of Doylestown, Pa., Cynthia Lee Winans of St. Augustine, Fla.; and Lisa Ann Mercer Appleby of Mendham, N.J.; sons-in-law, Jerold Cederlund and William Winans; brothers, Dr. Thomas Warren Mercer and Michael Pennock Mercer both of Dover, Del.; sister, Mary Louise Fillingame of Ponce Inlet, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Kathy Mercer and Jan Mercer; brother-in-law, Richard Fillingame; grandchildren, Nathan, Lori, Michael, Sydney, Shane, Christian, Paige, Andrew, Alyssa, Hope, Noel, Dennis, Nicole and Richard; great grandchildren, Joaquin, Liam, Jocelyn, Caleb, Addie and Colton.
Friends and family may call at 1 p.m. and funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, August 16, 2020, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover, Del. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Dover, Del.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to National Kidney Foundation at 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016.
