Esther Miller, 92 GREENWOOD - Esther Miller, of Greenwood, passed away on Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. She was 92. Esther was born in Mark Center, Ohio, to Jerry and Nancy Miller on Nov. 15, 1916, one of 15 children. After the early death of her mother, Esther cared for her father for many years. She is survived by two sisters, Bertha Bowers of Kingman, Ariz., and Elsie Miller of Milford, and many nieces and nephews. She was a loyal member of Laws Mennonite Church and a faithful supporter of Greenwood Mennonite School where she was one of the first students in 1928. "Aunt Jake," as she was affectionately called, was interested and involved in the lives of numerous children. She had been active in the Fresh Air Program, summer Bible schools, had offered countless hours of babysitting, and introduced great nieces and nephews to her love of catching and eating crabs. She'd even set up a pool in her yard so "her children" could swim. Known for her work ethic, Esther retired after 30 years at The Country Rest Home, then did elder care until she over 80 years old. Never hospitalized until this last week in hospice, Esther was a spirited and resilient woman. She lived independently until this past year, when she was cared for by her Donna (her niece) and Dale Jones. She enjoyed playing games and following the news, and was well-informed about baseball. Fiercely committed to her Baltimore Orioles, she watched every game and dispensed unequivocal coaching and color commentary from her armchair. Esther had a servant's heart. She gave generously and often anonymously. Her contributions will be long remembered. Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13, at Greenwood Mennonite Church, Greenwood. Viewing will be Thursday, Nov. 12, from 7 to 9 p.m, at the church. Interment will be in Greenwood Mennonite Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963. Arrangements by Fleischauer Funeral Home, Greenwood.
