Elizabeth S. 'Betty' Clough, 84

SMYRNA - Elizabeth S. "Betty" Clough, of Smyrna, formerly of Petersburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 84. Mrs. Clough was born June 22, 1924, in Wilmington, to the late Albert Silver and Ruth Breaton Silver. She attended Wilmington Friends School and the Quaker School in Wilmington and then Westminster Choir College in Philadelphia. She worked for Hercules during World War II. Mrs. Clough loved to play the piano which she played in the Petersburg Church and also at Green Meadows Nursing Home. She took in and cared for many stray dogs over the years. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David C. Clough Sr. in 1992. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ruth Clough of Evanston, Wyo.; her sister, Joyce Koch of Bath, Maine; her devoted friend and caregiver for the last 25 years, Loretta Wootten; and Wayne Meredith who took care of her dogs after she went into the nursing home and other friends and neighbors who helped her through the years. Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Humane Society, 701 A. Street, Wilmington, DE 19801. Letters of condolences may be sent, and guestbook signed, at torbertfuneral.com.
