HARTLY - Elizabeth B. "Betty" Hettel, of Hartly, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at Capitol Health Care, Dover, surrounded by her loving family. She was 90. Mrs. Hettel was born on July 1, 1921, in Elmira, N.Y., the only child of the late Clifford and Alice (Sweeney) Beardsley. Betty's vivacious and outgoing personality started as a young person. She was head cheerleader for Collingdale High School and her sweetheart, Harry, was the captain of the football team. They married in 1946 and were together the rest of their lives. Betty and Harry loved travel, they were avid league bowlers in the 70's and 80's; they loved boating, water skiing and were lake and beach goers. Betty loved her flowers and gardening and her back yard pool. Betty was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who thoroughly enjoyed spending time with and celebrating with her family. She was truly a person who made a difference in this world. She was a great listener and always made time to talk over coffee. Betty's warm and friendly personality, great smile and laugh will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She retired after many years of work as a Retail Office Manager for Town & Country Department Store in West Chester, Pa. In her 70's returned to the work force for Critical Specialties of West Chester where she and her team prepared surgical kits for regional hospitals. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry J. Hettel in February of 2000. She is survived by three daughters, Eileen Gilmore and her husband Russell of Quarryville, Pa., Joanne Hettel of Lancaster, Pa., and Bobbi J. Hettel-Minner and her husband Gary of Hartly; a son, S. Kurt Hettel of Westampton, N.J.; seven grandchildren, Becky, Jesse, Holly, Melissa, Justin, Ashley, and Skip; and three great-grandchildren, Emily, Ethan, and Mason . Memorial services will be noon, Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Alzheimer's Association Delaware Chapter, 2306 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805 or to the American Heart Association, 200 Continental Drive, Newark, DE 19713.
