Edith Melvin, 89

CAMDEN - Edith Melvin, of Camden, died Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, in Milford Hospice Center. She was 89. Born in Goldsborough, Md., she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Elnora Bishop. Mrs. Melvin was a homemaker and also worked as a seamstress for the Ace Dress Factory. In her spare time, she enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles, embroidery and needlework, and cooking. Her home was most oftentimes the gathering place for holiday meals and gatherings. She also took great pride in her beautiful flower gardens, and raising African violets. She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother who instilled in her children the value of integrity, honesty, and earning your way. She especially liked to spoil her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Luke" Melvin; and two brothers, Leroy and Edgar Bishop. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, James A. and Mary Ann Melvin of Felton, Oscar D. and Thelma Rae Melvin of Harrington, and Wayne D. and Barbara Melvin of Camden; daughter, Joanne Weller of Dover; brothers, Oscar Bishop Jr. of Felton, Louis Bishop of Camden, Milton Bishop of Felton, Jacob Bishop of Felton, and George Bishop of Cheswold; sisters, Ellen Mackey of Greensboro, Kate Breeding of Greensboro, Elnora Jackson of Greensboro, Alice Bishop of Camden, and Priscilla Bishop of Camden; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20, in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington, where a visitation will be held one hour prior. Interment will be in Greensboro Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
