LAUREL - Emma Jean was born November 16, 1931, in Delmar to Carlton W. and Mattie C. Lowe. She attended Vaughn's School until she entered Laurel public schools from which she graduated in 1950. Her marriage to Richard Givens in December 1950 ended in divorce, and years later she married Alfred Hickey in January 1997. She was a homemaker and raised six children. Jean then was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture until retiring in 1994. A lifelong creative interest in sewing and handicrafts, particularly knitting and quilting, gave her much pleasure over her lifetime. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and its Martha-Ruth Circle, the Laurel Red Hat Lunch Bunch, and a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Jean was very supportive of her high school class reunions and enjoyed gathering more often with classmates and keeping in touch with friends. Jean is survived by children, Richard (Rick) A. Givens II of Dover, Catherine (Cathy) L. Calloway (Mike) of Bethel, Charles (Carl) C. Givens (Jacque), Craig W. Givens (Kathy), Melody S. Atkins, and R. James (Jamie) Givens all of Laurel; three stepchildren; and a brother C. Ralph Lowe of Laurel; 15 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; two cousins; nieces and nephews also survive her. In addition to her parents and husbands; Jean was predeceased by son Kevin G. Givens; and a brother, James (Jim) W. Lowe. A funeral service is scheduled March 25, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church, 200 W. Market Street, Laurel, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice Foundation, 248 E. Chestnut Hill Road, Suite 4, Newark, DE 19713, Centenary United Methodist Church, or to a favorite charity. Arrangements are in the care of the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home Laurel, DE.
