Drennen: Legal and illegal immigrants should be treated differently

Posted

In response to the Opinion by Maria Matos, it is unfortunate that advocates conflate immigration with illegal immigration (“Ban sought for 287(g) ICE partnerships”). No one wants immigrants to worry about their lives in Delaware if they came to the country the legal and proper way.

The misguided information in this piece misrepresents the job U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement does. If people are here illegally, than they should just self-deport. Worries over. But, if you decide to stay and break the law, you need to be concerned.

The illegal immigrants are taking money, education and health benefits from American citizens. Ask those who have been affected by illegal immigrants committing felonies like murder, rape, domestic violence and robberies. Like anyone else, you face the consequences. When they commit crimes, they are deciding to separate families, and just like Americans, they go to jail. That is the job of the police. If they can assist ICE in these situations, it is the right thing to do to keep Americans safe.

Don’t mislead people about the difference between legal and illegal immigrants.
