Dr. Robert H. Smith

HARRINGTON - Dr. Robert H. Smith, DDS of Harrington, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2011. Bob was born March 11, 1920, the son of Robert Baynard and Hattie Graham Smith. Bob was Valedictorian of his Harrington High School class in 1938. During his senior year, he held the state basketball scoring record with 35 points and batted over .400 on the school's baseball team. After graduating from the University of Maryland, and the Dental School at the University of Maryland, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Korea. While enjoying a 49 year dentistry career in Harrington, he was a life-long member of the Delaware Dental Society, served on the Board of Directors of the former First National Bank, and was an active member of the American Legion and Rotary International. He also enjoyed supporting local sporting events, gardening, collecting Indian artifacts and listening to barbershop quartet music. He is survived by his five children, Carol, Bob, Joan, Neal, and Mark; ten grandchildren, eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; brother, William A.; and sister, Kathryn. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 1901 Rockland Road Wilmington, DE 19801. Condolences can be sent to 912 West Lane, Milford, DE 19963.
