DOVER - Dr. Mary Green Wyche, of Dover, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2008. She was 69.
Dr. Wyche, the youngest of six siblings and the offspring of the late George Herbert and Lillian Vaughn Green, was born Oct. 29, 1938, in Norfolk, Va.
At the age of 16 she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.
After spending two years at the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College (now Norfolk State University), Dr. Wyche matriculated at Howard University where she obtained her bachelor's degree in physical education.
Her other academic degrees include M.Ed. in secondary education which she received from Southern University and a Ph.D. in recreation and higher education administration from University of Maryland, College Park.
In 2004, she retired from her position of vice president/special assistant to the president at Delaware State University in Dover.
Dr. Wyche is listed in the Who's Who in Education, the World of Who's Who of American Women, and the International Biographical Center of Men and Women of Distinction.
She was a member of many distinguished organizations.
Her membership affiliation are: the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (Institutional Representative); Alpha Chapter initiate of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Phi Delta Kappa; Phi Epsilon Omega; charter member and vice president of the Dover Chapter of Links, Inc.; vice president of the Delaware Area Chapter of Continentals, Inc.; charter member of Delicados, Inc.; and member and CCD instructor at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Dr. Wyche married Edmond Wyche on June 3, 1978. "Ed," a beloved and successful coach, retired as the director of athletics from Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, Ga.
She was preceded in death by a brother, George Herbert Green Jr.; nephew, Herbert Dawley; and step-son, Bruce C. Wyche.
In addition to her loving husband, Edmond, Mary is survived by her sisters, Dr. Eleanor Green Dawley Jones of Virginia Beach, Va., Barbara G. Bess and her husband George of Baltimore, and Lillian G. Childers and her husband William of Washington, D.C.; brother, Walter H. Green and his wife Alveta of Norfolk, Va.; nephews, Dr. Edward Armistead Dawley and his wife Armande of Dover, Everette B. Jones and his wife Tonya, George T. Bess Jr. and Michael J. Bess and his wife Jacquetta of Baltimore, and Walter H. Green Jr. of Norfolk; nieces, Alveta G. Mitchell and her husband Robert and Darlene Green of Virginia Beach; stepdaughters, Sherry R. Parrish and her husband Michael of Hyattsville, Md., Cheryl R. Williams and her husband Micky of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Tosca B. Williams of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Tammie Edwards of Bowie, Md.; step-son, Barry E. Wyche and his wife Vaness; sisters-in-law, Carmen Allen of Lakeland, Fla., Lizzie Mae Moreland of Melbourne, Fla., and Elnora Green of Norfolk; 25 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The surviving family and many friends sadly mourn the death of this kind, generous, noble, dearly beloved lady and her memory will be a benediction until the end of their natural lives.
Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Cross Church, Dover.
