Dr. Janet Heron Asay Miller died on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018, after a four month battle with cancer. Janet was born on Oct. 21, 1956, in Palo Alto, Calif., to Bill and Barbara Heron.
She received a Bachelor of Science from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a doctorate in psychology from the University of Kansas. Thereafter she worked as a child psychologist for the State of Delaware before starting her own private practice for families and children in Dover. Dr. Miller taught graduate courses at Wilmington University for the Community Counseling Program, as well as courses at Wesley College. She later moved forward in her career to secondary teaching. She earned a Master of Arts from Wesley College and taught science at Dover High School and Lake Forest High School. Janet dedicated her life to helping children, families, and the environment, and remains an inspiration to all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by two sons, Camden and Cooper Asay; her loving husband, Michael Miller; parents, Bill and Barbara Heron; brother, Bruce and his wife Stella; brother, Randy and his wife Sharon; step-daughter, Stephanie Pacheco and her husband Will and children William and Evelyn; goddaughters, Zoe and Asha Sowers Miller; ex-husband, Chris Asay and his partner Christiane; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and countless friends and loved ones from the many chapters of her life.
Janet loved living at her home in Felton, where she was surrounded, supported, and inspired, by nature. She equally loved working with clients and students, and helping them find and take their next step in growth and learning. And Janet deeply loved her husband, family, and friends.
There will be a memorial for Dr. Miller on Feb. 24, 2018 at 12 noon, at the Labyrinth at Christ's Church in Dover.
A gathering will follow at the Delaware Agricultural Museum.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to non-profit organizations which work to fulfill the goals and values Janet believed in:
1. 350.org
2. Thich Nhat Hahn Foundation
3. Delaware Public Media
