WYOMING - Dr. Harold A. Mersky passed away on December 6, 2014. He was born on January 3, 1923 to Abe and Molly Mersky, in Woodbine, N.J. (Cape May County), a small settlement of Eastern European Jewish immigrants. Known as "Weify" to the family and friends who adored him, he graduated from Woodbine High School in 1941 and began veterinary school before joining the Army in 1944. After the war, he completed his degree in veterinarian medicine at Kansas State University and moved to Delaware in 1949. Dr. Mersky was every bit the country veterinarian. With a pick-up truck packed with medical gear, he travelled throughout rural Delaware and Maryland's Eastern Shore making emergency visits to dairy farmers at any hour of the day or night. He was also well known throughout the region for breeding, trading and riding quarter horses. He continued breaking colts into his 70's and had many broken ribs to show for it. Dr. Mersky also had a small-animal practice in Dover, and most of his many clients and friends knew him simply as "Doc". After retiring from practice in 2007, he moved to Nashville, Tenn. He is proceeded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Miriam, who passed away in 1992. He and Miriam raised four children in Dover and Wyoming; Martin (Shirley), Marcie, Bonnie Miller (Bob) and Seth (Theresa). They survive him; together, with eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many other beloved family members and old friends from Dover. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 8, 2014 at the Schoenberg Memorial Chapel, 519 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington Del. 19809, followed by burial in the Jewish Community Cemetery, Wilmington, Del. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease Research, Canadian Hadassah, or Hadassah of America.
