Dr. Christopher Edward Coon of Georgetown, Delaware died on Sunday, July 21, 2024. A graduate of Caesar Rodney High School and the University of Delaware, he earned his doctorate of veterinary medicine from the University of Minnesota in 1993. He returned home to Delaware and was a veterinarian for Dover Animal Hospital before founding Haven Lake Animal Hospital in Milford, Delaware in 1999.
Chris was many things to many people: a friend who always had cold beer to share in the fridge, and if you were lucky it was one he brewed; a PADI Master Diver and Rescue Diver and renowned dive buddy who would come back with a stringer full of fish, ready to share; a beekeeper with multiple beehives and the guy who stopped on a highway to help a turtle cross safely; a veterinarian who never hesitated to provide the best care for a family pet; a boss who could go along with your jokes and then one-up you when you least expected it; a foodie who, when trying anything spicy, would break out into a sweat and say it felt like he "ate the sun"; a music enthusiast who would always surprise you with new songs he would sing and dance to; an outspoken critic of board games, but a fan of playing gin-rummy when camping; an equestrian whose horses whinnied for him; an amateur builder/electrician/mechanic who spent his free time fixing things and building new projects with friends; a recreational skier who could laugh off a fall; a dance partner for whenever a good song was on; a hockey and wheelchair rugby enthusiast; a beach-goer who loved to swim out beyond the breakers; a teacher who only wanted to share everything he knew about the world around us; and an avid naturalist and waterman who always wanted to sit on the porch when it rained. But his most important and most memorable role in this world will always be that of a loving and caring son, husband, and father.
For the short time that Chris was with us on this earth, he created countless memories and experiences that we are all so incredibly grateful for and will always cherish. He was so loved, and is so dearly missed.
Chris is survived by his wife, Sheila Coon; his daughter, Lexi Coon and son-in-law, Jordan Lingo; his mother, Justine Davis and step-father, Paul Davis; his sister, Cathy Michalski and brother-in-law, Brian Michalski; his nephew, Brice Michalski; and his sister, Kelly Moberg and brother-in-law, Mike Moberg. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Coon.
At this time, services will be private at the request of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to USA Wheelchair Rugby at usawr.org/give. Those who would like to share a memory of Chris can do so by dropping off a card at Haven Lake Animal Hospital.
Arrangements by Lofland Funeral Home, Milford, DE.
