The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is saddened to share the passing of Eastern Correctional Institution Correctional Officer Jeffrey White. He died unexpectedly at his home on Monday, March 30, 2026.
A native of Somerset County, Officer White was born in Crisfield and raised in Wenona. He was a 2001 graduate of Washington High School and attended the former NASCAR Technical Institute in Mooresville, North Carolina. Outside of work, he was a waterman who loved time on the water. He also enjoyed dirt track racing, wrestling, trips to the beach, and playing games on the boardwalk.
Officer White served the State of Maryland as a correctional officer with dedication and professionalism and was a valued member of the Eastern Correctional Institution team. He had served with the Department since May of 2017.
“Officer Jeffrey White served with quiet strength, professionalism, and compassion,” said DPSCS Secretary Carolyn J. Scruggs. “His passing is a painful loss for the Department, for Eastern Correctional Institution, and for all who had the privilege of working alongside him. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow officers during this very difficult time.”
“Officer White was a valued member of the ECI family, and his loss is being felt deeply throughout this institution,” said ECI Warden Monika Brittingham. “He was known by his fellow staff as a kind and dependable colleague, and we join together in mourning his passing while keeping his loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.”
“I, Captain Chad Wilkins, had the honor and privilege of not only working beside Officer Jeffrey White while on the Night Shift, but I also taught him while he attended the 2017 Correctional Academy, Class ELC 099, at Wor-Wic Community College. Officer White always came to work with a smile on his face and a positive attitude. He works well along side his fellow officers, always assisted whenever needed, and easy to depend on whenever he was needed. Whenever I spoke with him, he always had calm demeanor and truly was a good person at heart. ECI truly lost a one of a kind soul.”
Funeral services for Officer White will be held on Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Church, 9150 Deal Island Road, Wenona. Visitation will begin at noon, with services arranged by Hinman Funeral Home.
The Department asks that the public keep Officer White’s loved ones and colleagues in their thoughts.
