MILTON — The Down Syndrome Association of Delaware will open an office at 28607 Meadowview Drive, allowing it to expand its reach in Sussex County.

“We offer services to families throughout the entire state, but this is exciting news because we will be able to reach more of our members more easily and locally in Sussex County,” said Lauren Camp Gates, the agency’s executive director.

Founded in 1979, the association is a nonprofit that supports families, promotes community involvement and encourages a lifetime of opportunities for people with Down syndrome.

It has been providing education, events and advocacy out of its office in Newark, often traveling to bring resources to other communities.

Purchasing and opening another facility by 2025 had been the group’s goal. The Milton site features office and meeting spaces, plus a large, fenced-in playground.
The purchase was made possible by the support of many individuals and businesses in the greater Delaware community, including the Welfare Foundation, the McDonald Foundation, the S.L. Townsend Family Fund, the Crystal Trust and Sussex County Council, as well as a federal grant through the American Rescue Plan.

The association invites its members, supporters and the community to attend the grand opening from 1-3 p.m. Thursday. There will be tours, networking and light refreshments.
