WIMBLEDON — Big tennis tournaments like Wimbledon always seem to have their Cinderella stories.
Now Dover’s Madison Brengle is becoming a part of one of the storylines at this year’s Grand Slam event.
This afternoon, Brengle needed just 45 minutes to upset fourth-seeded Sofia Kenin, 6-2, 6-4, in the second round of the women’s singles draw.
The 31-year-old Brengle is ranked No. 82 in the world, while Kenin, a native of Russia, is ranked No. 6 overall.
The upset marked the fourth time in her career that Brengle has toppled a top-10 player. She shocked No. 2 Serena Williams in 2017 and owns two upsets over Petra Kvitova when she was No. 8 and No. 4.
It’s the second time since 2017 that Brengle has reached the third round on the grass courts of Wimbledon and the fourth time overall that she’s in the third round of a Grand Slam tournament.
Brengle made the third round twice — reaching the fourth round in 2015 — at the Australian Open.
Brengles next faces Viktorija Golubic of Swtizerland, who is ranked No. 66 in the world.
The 22-year-old Kenin, who now lives in Florida, won the Australian Open title in 2020 and finished second in the tourney in both 2019 and 2021. But she's never made it past the second round in three appearances at Wimbledon.
In today's match, she committed 41 unforced errors to only seven for Brengle in stats that are pretty standard for one of the Delawarean's matches.
On Monday, Brengle twice came back from 5-3 deficits to knock off Christina McHale in the opening round. She saved four match points in the match.
The three-set match had to be finished on Tuesday after it was stopped because of darkness.
