Madison Brengle needed less than 20 minutes to close out her 6-3, 6-1 win over Sara Errani in the first round of the women’s singles draw at Wimbledon on Wednesday.

The match was suspended by rain on Tuesday with the 33-year-old from Dover leading 6-3, 3-0 over the 36-year-old Italian.

Brengle advances to face Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, who is the No. 21 seed in the bracket, on Thursday.

Brengle is trying to reach the third round at Wimbledon for only the third time in her career and for the first time since 2021.

The victory was Brengle’s seventh in the event and evens her career record 7-7 all-time in the Grand Slam tennis tournament. It took one hour and 18 minutes for Brengle, ranked No. 114 in the world, to down the 79th-ranked Errani.

Brengle had lost her three previous meetings with Errani, all by set scores of 2-1. Also, Brengle had lost six of her last eight singles matches going into Wimbledon but she is 2-3 on grass this year.

In her career, Brengle is 0-2 against the 28-year-old Alexandrova. Ranked No. 22 in the world. Alexandrova has never made it past the second round at Wimbledon in five previous appearances.

In two tournaments on grass this year, Alexandrova owns a record of 8-1.

College soccer

Hens add women’s assistant: Delaware women’s soccer head coach Kelly Lawrence has hired Liisi Vink-Lanias as an assistant.

Vink-Lainas most recently coached in Illinois for four years with FC Central Illinois and Central Illinois United where she was the girls’ assistant director of coaching for FC Central Illinois.

Collegiately, she played at Penn State. In 2015, she was a member of the Nittany Lions’ Division I NCAA national championship team. Vink-Lanias also won three Big Ten championships, and one Big Ten Tournament championship.
She was named Academic All-Big Ten in 2015 and 2016.

After college, Vink-Lainas played internationally, earning caps for the Estonian Women’s National Team and playing for FC Flora Tallinn in the top Estonian and Baltic Region leagues.
