DOVER — Matthew Clendaniel, 29, of Dover, was arrested for injuring a police officer following a trespassing complaint at the Capital Inn early Tuesday, authorities said.

Spokesman Master Cpl. Ryan Schmid said investigation began at 1:16 a.m. when Dover Police was called to the hotel for a man trespassing on the property. While responding, officers were told that the suspect was leaving and a description was provided, police said.

Officers arrived in the area and located Mr. Clendaniel, who matched the description provided. Officers told Mr. Clendaniel to stop, however he kept walking away from officers, police said.

Police said Mr. Clendaniel actively resisted arrest and would not put his hands behind his back, police said.

Three officers took Mr. Clendaniel into custody and police said one sustained minor injuries to his lower body during the struggle.

It was determined that Mr. Clendaniel was under the influence of alcohol once he was taken into custody, police said. Mr. Clendaniel spit on an officer while being placed in a patrol vehicle.

Mr. Clendaniel was charged with second-degree assault of law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with force or violence, offensive touching, third-degree criminal trespass, menacing, breach of release, public intoxication and drunk on a highway. He was released on $4,250 unsecured bond.
