Dover man charged with firearm, drug offenses

DOVER — A 32-year-old Dover man faces drug and firearm charges following a traffic stop Monday, authorities said.

Dover police spokesman Master Cpl. Ryan Schmid said officers saw Orlando Batson in the area of South New and West Reed streets at 2:23 p.m. He was known to have a warrant for his arrest.

Officers contacted Mr. Batson inside a vehicle, and he was taken into custody without incident.

A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded Ruger 9 mm handgun with an obliterated serial number and 1.1 grams of cocaine, Cpl. Schmid said.

Mr. Batson was charged with possession of a firearm by a person prohibited (two counts), possession of ammunition by a person prohibited, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, on $52,000 cash bail.
