Douglas “Doug” Vitale, of Dover, Delaware, passed away unexpectedly on October 4, 2026. Doug had an infectious energy, a big laugh and an enthusiasm for life. He was outgoing, adventurous, and up for anything - preferably a trip to Rehoboth Beach, or the Sinnemahoning Mountains. More than anything, he loved his family - his wife Lesley (Seelhorst), daughter Natalie (11) and son Dylan (18). They were the center of his world, and he treasured his time with them. Doug was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and grew up in Rural Valley, Pennsylvania, with a close group of friends who persisted through decades and geographies. He attended Shannock Valley High School, where he played football and baseball. Doug graduated in 2006 from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Communications.
In addition to sometimes attending class, Doug played rugby for IUP (acquiring his longstanding nickname “Meat”) and discovered his talent for bartending at Al Patti’s Bar and Grille, where he continued to make lasting friendships.
In 2012, Doug reconnected via Facebook with Lesley, whom he had known since she was born – their fathers were high school classmates and friends. Lesley was the love of his life, and he relocated to Delaware that year to be with her and Dylan; they welcomed Natalie in 2014. In Delaware, Doug built a community through his work as a bartender in Middletown, Rehoboth and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He spent his free time with his family – finding a new disc golf course or a brewery, taking day trips to the beach, or watching Steelers games together on Sunday afternoons.
A lifelong lover of the outdoors, Doug’s favorite escape was the Sinnemahoning Mountains in Western Pennsylvania. His family spent many long weekends there hiking, fishing in the Sinnemahoning River, and simply being together. He returned often to Indiana, Pennsylvania to see family and friends, and, of course, for the annual Rural Valley Ding-a-Ling softball tournament.
Doug always had time for his people. He would take Natalie and Dylan on beach trips and adventure days and attended every lacrosse or flag football game that he could. He spent hours in a parking lot teaching Dylan to drive and had Natalie holding a rugby ball before she could run. He was always the first to throw a football with his nephew Charlie and taught his niece Alice how to fish. Whether you were family, an old rugby friend, a coworker, or someone he just met, Doug’s gregarious, inclusive energy had a way of making people feel like they were part of the fun. Doug was a beloved son, husband and father; an adoring uncle
and a cherished son-in-law, brother-in-law, godfather, cousin, colleague and friend.
His presence was enormous, and his absence will be felt deeply. Doug is survived by his wife Lesley; daughter Natalie and son Dylan; father Robert Vitale; mother Cathy (Douglas) Vitale; parentsin-law Todd and Karen Seelhorst; sister-in-law Lindsey Seelhorst (Robert Bergman); niece Alice and nephew Charlie; aunt Lori Douglas (Lee Duer) as well as an extraordinary circle of lifelong friends, including Kirk Rearik, Ronald (Lumpy) Neal, and William (Billy) Wingard.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ken and Marie Douglas; paternal grandparents, Richard and Pat (Evelyn) Vitale, and uncle, Richard Vitale.
A memorial gathering will be held at the Retriever Bar in Chestertown, Maryland (337 1/2 High St.) on October 18 from 1-3 PM, and another gathering in Indiana, Pennsylvania at a later date; details will follow.
