Dorothy Minner CAMDEN - Dorothy Minner, of Camden, passed away March 20, 2010, in her home at the age of 97. She was born July 8, 1912, in Felton, the daughter of Joseph and Laura (Roe) Minner. Dot, as she was always known, was raised on a farm located between Felton and Canterbury and attended Canterbury Church along with her eight brothers and sisters. She worked very hard in school and graduated from the new Felton High School in 1930 as the Valedictorian of her class. She then enrolled at the Women's College of the University of Delaware graduating in 1932. Her first teaching position was at the Odessa Elementary School. She continued in that position for nine years after which she accepted another elementary teaching position at the Alfred I. DuPont School in Wilmington. She pursued further education earning her Bachelor's Degree and advanced degrees from the University of Delaware enabling her to become principal of the A.I. DuPont School, a position she held for fifteen years before retiring in 1972. During the span of 40 years working in the education field, Dot was always known as a popular, but very stern teacher and administrator. Following her retirement, she moved to Camden and with the assistance of relatives and caregivers, she was able to remain there until her death. She enjoyed playing bridge weekly with friends in their homes and at the Harrington Senior Center, going to the slots and watching television especially the game shows. Over the years, she traveled extensively to many places including Europe, Hawaii and Thailand. She was a member of Whatcoat United Methodist Church in Camden. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Lawrence Minner, William Marvel, and Howard Williams; sisters, Pearl Beideman, Agnes Sipple, Helen Pyott Houston, Anna Biggs, and Pauline Morgan; nieces, Betty Bergstrom, Shirley Hairgrove, and Clara Fish; nephews, Howard Williams Jr., and Donald Sipple; and also her longtime friend and companion, Carl Prettyman. She is survived by her nieces, Ruth Ann Beideman, Katherine Roberts, and Virginia Hurd and her husband of Milford, R. Marie Moore of Felton, Connie K. Morgan of Houston, and Ingrid Bogan and her husband Dr. Craig Bogan of Wyncote, Pa.; and nephews, Ronald Sipple and his wife Margaret of Bridgeville, William Sipple and his wife Joyce of Viola, George Beideman and his wife Pat of Slaughter Beach, Jay Biggs and his wife Betty of Greenwood, and Larry Sipple and his wife Connie of Milford. The family wishes to express their appreciation to her special caregiver, Debbie Howard. Funeral services will be noon, Wednesday, March 24, at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with a viewing to be held one hour earlier. Burial will follow at Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Hwy., Lotus Plaza, Dover, DE 19901. Letters of condolences can be sent to www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
