FELTON - Dorothy Hughes Donaway, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, in her home. She was 95. Mrs. Donaway married Robert J. Donaway on Aug. 5, 1939 at Barratts Chapel, Frederica. He preceded her in death on March 11, 1994. Their only son, Robert Hughes Donaway was killed while serving in Vietnam on Aug. 18, 1969. Dorothy was born to the late Benjamin and Ida Minner Hughes Sr. Dorothy graduated from Felton High School in 1931, and the University of Delaware in 1935. She taught school in Felton, for 37 years, teaching second, but mostly third graders. She was a member of the Felton United Methodist Church, and several Education Organizations. In 1962, she was president of Felton High School Alumni Association, and under her leadership, the Felton Alumni Scholarship Fund was established. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Donaway; and brothers, Clifford Hughes, and Benjamin Hughes Jr. She is survived by a godchild, W. Drew Hammond of Washington, D.C.; nieces and nephews, Rebecca Weaver, Regina Rudnick, George Hughes, Ronald Hughes, and Cynthia Hughes; and many faithful friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington, where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be at Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.
