Dorothy Eleanore Helf Smith

FELTON - Dorothy Eleanore Helf Smith of Felton, passed away Fri. April 1, 2011, at Kent General Hospital. She was 93. She was born Sept. 10, 1917, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to the late Harold R. Helf and Ruth C. McCahan Helf. Dorothy married Woodrow W. Smith on December 29, 1939. Dorothy's first job was writing checks for CCC in Harrisburg, Pa. She worked as an aide at St. John's Lutheran Day School in York, Pa., she had also worked for Science Press, Inc in Ephrata, Pa. as a proofreader, and also as head of the copy prep department where she worked with medical journals, Standard and Poor Stock Exchange reports and other technical journals. Dorothy was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Smyrna, Del., and a member of the Lydia Circle in that church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Smith in 1987; a sister, Claire-Jean Bardolf in 2010; a great-granddaughter, Kelsey Timmons; and a great-grandson, Alexander Fitts Smith. She is survived by her three children, Karen Lee Smith of Felton, Del., Harold W. Smith and his wife Meridan of Hartly, Del., Richard Smith of Reading, Pa; her brother, Larry Helf of York, Pa; her sister, Rae-Ellen Bowling of Camp Hill, Pa; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Dorothy will be buried beside her husband in the Landis Valley Mennonite Cemetery, Lancaster County, PA. at 1 p.m., Wed. April 6, 2011. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Peace Lutheran Church, Smyrna, DE. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Peace Lutheran Church Building Fund, 5048 Wheatley's Pond Road, Smyrna, DE 19977. Letters of condolence may be sent and the guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
