Band uniform fund drive

President of the Cambridge-South Dorchester High School Music Boosters Jessica Suggs has organized a gofundme.com drive. She posted, “C-SD has the best marching band on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and we want it to show not only in our music, but also in our presentation. Our current uniforms are more than 30 years old, and coming apart. We are the only band on the Eastern Shore performing the way we do, and we need uniforms as amazing as our performances.”

To donate, visit gofundme.com, and search for Cambridge-South Dorchester.

Special education

The Maryland State Department of Education announces the launch of a new grant opportunity that will leverage American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Relief Funds (ESSER III) to reduce the overidentification of historically underserved students in special education programs. Through the Reducing Overidentification in Special Education program, local education agencies (LEAs) will invest in strategies that address and mitigate the learning loss of persistently underperforming students who risk being misidentified with intellectual and/or emotional disabilities.

Applicants for the ROSE program must commit to addressing the substantial overidentification of students based on race, sex, gender, home language and income status in LEA policies, processes and practices. To do so, applicants will provide detailed baseline data and clear, feasible and ambitious success. Applicants must also ensure all goals and measurable success criteria are disaggregated by all student subgroups, particularly historically underserved groups to ensure that proposed plans address existing and persistent disparities.

Grant applications are due by 11:59 a.m. May 16.

Summer food service

The Maryland State Department of Education is seeking public and private nonprofit organizations to serve as meal sites for the Summer Food Service Program, a U.S. Department of Agriculture program that provides free, nutritious meals to children and teens in the summer months when school is not in session.

The SFSP is a federally funded, state-administered program that provides reimbursement to organizations that sponsor sites to serve nutritious meals to children. The sites are located in areas where at least 50% of households qualify for free or reduced price meals under the National School Lunch Program, or 50% of the children enrolled in a summer program qualify for free or reduced price meals.

The SFSP is open to children and teens who participate during the school year in a public or private nonprofit school, ages 18 and under and to individuals over 18 who have a mental or physical disability.

The deadline for applying to be a summer meal site is June 15. For more information about the SFSP, please visit eatsmartmaryland.org. Interested organizations should contact Sara Brandt at MSDE’s Office of School and Community Nutrition Programs at 410-767-0201 or at sara.brandt@maryland.gov
