Donoghue: Cool Spring Crossing too big for Lewes area

Posted

Editor’s note: The following was also sent to the Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission and County Council on Monday.

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed Cool Spring Crossing development near our neighborhood. While I understand the need for affordable housing in our region, I believe that this project would have a detrimental impact on our community. First and foremost, Cool Springs Crossing, west of Lewes, is simply too large for our area. This is a view that is held not only by the general public but by state officials, who have rejected the developer’s application four times, citing this very same reason. The increase in population density would put a strain on our already overburdened infrastructure, leading to increased traffic congestion, noise pollution and strain on our public services. Additionally, the construction would result in significant environmental damage, destroying natural habitats and putting wildlife at risk.

Further, the type of housing being proposed is simply not in keeping with the character of our region. This development would drastically alter the aesthetic of our area, replacing the existing greenery and open spaces with unsightly, high-density housing and commercial properties.

In conclusion, I strongly urge you to reconsider the Cool Spring Crossing project and reject the amendment to the future land use map as requested by the developers. While I recognize the need for affordable housing, I believe that this project is simply not the right fit for the Lewes community. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
