DOVER — The stars were out at King Cole Farm for the 2025 Stars of Delaware celebration, hosted by the Daily State News, on Sept. 4.

The event was the culmination of a readers’ choice poll that engaged thousands of State News readers, who voted for their favorite people, places, businesses and things to do in Delaware.

The annual Stars of Delaware features hundreds of restaurants, parks, companies and individuals, all of which serve their customers and community each day. Readers voted throughout the summer, on everything from education, health and beauty, home services, attractions, events and more.

Over 200 people gathered at King Cole Farm to celebrate and honor the 2025 winners and finalists.

“Stars of Delaware continues to surpass everyone’s expectations. This year, we had over 44,000 votes and nominations,” associate publisher Tonda Parks said. “We had hundreds of winners and finalists in nearly 200 categories. It is clear our readers love to eat, shop and support local businesses throughout the region — and they definitely show their support.”

“At the Daily State News, our mission is to strengthen the communities we serve by publishing unbiased journalism and growing local business. This project is one that serves this purpose. Stars of Delaware is a list of exceptional people and places in our state. It’s a great tool to help plan your next outings and adventures in Delaware.”

One of the highlights of the evening was the announcement of the Person of the Year. For 2025, there were over 700 nominations for the honor, a testament to the good work of people who make the area a better place to live.

Dawn Mitchell, founder of Doggone Happy Animal Rescue, received a rousing round of applause and graciously accepted the award for this year.

Since starting her nonprofit, Ms. Mitchell has rescued and rehomed over 8,000 dogs. Her commitment requires long days, nights and weekends to ensure a better life for dogs with special needs and, ultimately, for the people who adopt them.

Person of the Year finalists included Dr. Kimberly Gaines, Dr. Assar Rather and JamieLynn Frank.

Dr. Gaines is a veterinarian, Dr. Rather is a colorectal physician, and Ms. Frank is a recent graduate of Padua Academy. Each volunteers time in his or her community, making significant contributions — and State News readers took notice.

Each year, the Stars of Delaware contest gets readers involved. The magazine highlights the best people, businesses and places across the state, and the ticketed gathering celebrates those honorees.

The evening at King Cole Farm included a welcome reception, featuring local wine and beer and passed hors d’oeuvres. The weather allowed many guests to spend time outside around the firepits.

The Shasta Shutter Bug II Photo Booth, sponsored by the Seiff Center for Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery, was a big hit with guests.

The buffet was catered by SoDel Concepts, and a festive balloon arch, presented by Delaware Cardiovascular Associates, marked the way to food and fun.

Meanwhile, the Dover Federal Credit Union sponsored a toast, honoring all winners and finalists. The Vanderwende’s Farm Fresh Ice Cream Truck, sponsored by the Delaware Municipal Electric Corp., provided dessert in a variety of flavors.

The dance party, brought to attendees by Chesapeake Utilities, featured live music by local band Mike Hines & the Look. The floor was full of fun and laughter.

Lastly, before visitors left, they could grab a copy of the keepsake Stars of Delaware publication and party favors presented by La Baguette French Bakery.

Door prizes were also awarded throughout the evening.
