Dewey Frederick Taylor

CAMDEN - Lt. Col. Dewey Frederick Taylor (Ret.), formerly of Stewartstown, Pa., passed away Dec. 17, 2012, at the Milford Center in Milford, Del. He was born March 2, 1924, in Stewartstown, Pa. to Raymond and Ruth (Bonnet) Taylor. In 1949 he married Catherine Ann Young of New Freedom, Pa., and they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary before Catherine died in 2006.Mr. Taylor enlisted in the Army Air Corps on Dec. 7, 1942, and served as a Radar Observer aboard P61 and P38 aircraft during WWII. He was in the inactive reserve from March, 1946 through May, 1951, during which time he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Shippensburg State College, and taught at New Oxford High School and later at Stewartstown High School. Mr. Taylor was recalled to active duty in 1951. Included among Taylor's several awards are: Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal among other decorations. In 1973 Retired Lt. Col. Taylor was chosen by Maxwell Air Force Base to institute one of the first Junior ROTC programs in America at Dover, DE. Even though Mr. Taylor lived and served in many areas of the world, he always loved his hometown of Stewartstown. After retiring from the military, he and his family moved back home where he served his community in several capacities including library board member, town council member for eight years, council president for seven years, and mayor of Stewartstown. He also served as business administrator for Southeastern School District. Mr. Taylor was a member of the Shrewsbury Masonic Lodge No. 423, a member of the Stewartstown V.F.W. Post 7046, the American Legion, the Del-Vets Post #2 in Dover, DE, and the Lions and Kiwanis Clubs. Also while living in Stewartstown, he served as treasurer of the Mason Dixon Library and assisted with the ministry to the aged as a member of the Stewartstown United Methodist Church. At the time of his death, Mr. Taylor was a member of the Whatcoat United Methodist Church in Camden, Del. Dewey is survived by his three children, Geoffrey F. (wife Linda) of Chambersburg, Pa.; Susan S. (wife of Dean) Hess of Danvers, Mass.; and Sally A. Schaeffer of Dover, Del.; five grandchildren, Jordon Taylor, Mark Schaeffer, Clay Schaeffer, Terri Sweeney, and Lauren Hess; three great-grandchildren, Mason Schaeffer and Maxwell and Abigail Sweeney; his sister, Violet (wife of Buster) Harrell of York, Pa. In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by an infant brother, Harry. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Dec., 21, 2012 at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary Inc. located at 19 South Main Street, Stewartstown, PA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Dec. 21, 2012. Interment will be held at Joseph Giesey Memorial Cemetery in Shrewsbury, Pa. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mason Dixon Library, 250 Bailey Drive, Stewartstown, PA 17363 or to the Whatcoat United Methodist Church of Camden, 16 North Main Street, Camden, DE, 19934-1228.
