Delilah L. Simmons, 84 DOVER - Delilah L. Simmons, 84, of Dover, went to meet the Lord on Jan. 8, 2010, at home, surrounded by her husband, children and their husbands and loving friends. Born in Bedford, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Roy S. and Hester H. Shearer. At the age of nine her mother passed away and Delilah was sent to the Methodist Home for Children in Mechanicsburg, Pa. Upon graduation from the Mechanicsburg High School she entered the Memorial School of Nursing in Cumberland, Md., where she met her future husband on a blind date. She graduated from nursing school in 1946 and after three years of courtship, she was married at the Walter Reed Chapel in Wash. D.C., on the 5th of June in 1949. On Nov. 1, 1950, as she and a friend were walking they heard a noise that she thought sounded like "unloading coal." As a surgical nurse at Emergency Hospital, she soon found out what it was - the attempted assassination of President Harry S Truman when he was living at the Blair House during the White House renovation. Soon, they brought in Leslie Coffelt, a presidentail guard, his stomach being badly shot up he succumbed to his wounds. She traveled to several military bases, among them Bittburg and Spangdahlem in Germany, with her husband, Air Force Sgt. Robert E. Simmons. From there they went to Biggs A.F. Base in El Paso, Texas; and then to his home base in Dover. Mrs. Simmons did volunteer work as a school nurse at Holy Cross School and later in the Smyrna School District mostly at Clayton Elementary. After retiring she delivered Meals on Wheels with her husband at the Dover Modern Maturity Center. She loved working with children and was a lifetime member of the Clowns of Delaware. Just the mention of a parade and she was ready to go. Mrs. Simmons often spoke of the fine memories of her life as she was truly one who loved people and was loved by all. A good nurse, a good wife, a good mother, and above all else a good person. She leaves her husband of 60 years, Robert E. Simmons; three daughters, Roberta Ciskey and her husband Michael of Bethel, Conn., Denise Derda and her husband Roger of Prescott, Ariz., and Cynthia Smith and her husband Robert J. of Dover; five grandchildren; four great- grandchildren and a very dear friend, Fr. Bala Udumala of Hawthorne, Calif., and Hyderabad AP, India. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Holy Cross Church, 631 S. State St. Dover, where friends may call starting at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dover. Family suggests donations in her memory to Holy Cross Church. Arrangements are by Michael J. Ambruso Funeral Director, Inc. Dover. Condolences and Guest Book Signings may be made via www.ambruso.com.
