WILMINGTON — The suspected shooter, who left one dead and another injured at a Wilmington hospital, was taken into custody in Philadelphia, Wilmington police said at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said the 23-year-old man, whose name was not released, is awaiting extradition.

The shooting was a targeted, isolated incident, police said.

ChristianaCare Wilmington Hospital was locked down Tuesday after two people were shot inside, police said.

At an evening press conference, Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos said the shooter had not yet been apprehended.

Chief Campos said the hospital was cleared and it is in the process of reopening. At the 7:30 p.m. press conference, he said the lockdown had been lifted.

He did not offer details on  where in the hospital the victims were shot. Identities of the victims are being withheld out of respect for the families.

The shooting was reported about 3:30 p.m. at Wilmington Hospital, said David Karas, the chief administrative officer at the Wilmington Police Department.

ChristianaCare, which operates the hospital, said in an emailed statement it was diverting patients from its emergency department and "taking all appropriate steps to ensure the safety of our patients, caregivers and visitors."

"This is an active police investigation for a possible active shooter," the statement said.

Wilmington Mayor John Carney spoke at the start of the press conference.

"This has been a terrible day for our city and especially for the hospital workers who were subjected to this terror," he said. "It has also been a day though when our law enforcement teams were at their best they showed their bravery their expertise and their professionalism in the face of this terror. One thing i know for sure is that this community will lift one another one another up."
