Delaware battles No. 1 Duke to the wire before falling in NCAAs
DURHAM, N.C. — The Delaware men’s lacrosse team was hoping it could make lightning strike twice.
In the end, though, the Blue Hens had to settle fo giving No. 1 Duke everyting it could handle.
Delaware (13-4) led by three at halftime and were still tied in the fourth quarter before the Blue Devils finally came away with a 12-11 victory in the NCAA Division I Tournament on Sunday evening.
Trailing 12-10, the Hens closed within 12-11 on Mike Robinson’s goal with 2:35 remaining. Delaware then had one last chance to try to tie the contest but turned the ball over with 42 seconds left.
A year ago, the Hens upset No. 2 Georgetown, 10-9, in the first round of the NCAAs. Both last year and this season, Delaware had to win a play-in game to advance to the NCAA’s first round.
Tye Kurtz netted four goals for the Hens, who led 8-5 at halftime. The Blue Devils tallied the first four goals of the second half to take its first lead but Delaware tied the contest at both 9-9 and 10-10.
