Curtis J. Callaway CROFTON, Md. - Curtis Callaway, 64, of Crofton, Md., died June 23, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Md. Curtis was born Dec. 8, 1945, in Wilmington, Del. to Dorothy J. Callaway of Bridgeville, Del., and the late Thomas E. Callaway. He was raised in Milford, Del. He graduated from Salisbury State University in 1967 and was drafted into the Army and served in Viet Nam. Upon discharge he taught Geography in Prince George's County Public Schools at Parkdale High School in Greenbelt, Md. He resigned his teaching position and began his 24 year career in firefighting within the District of Columbia Fire Department in Oct. 31, 1971, and retired as a Battalion Fire Chief on Aug. 30, 1995. After retirement he was employed by the Harbour School and helped design, remodel and maintain the school facility as the program expanded He fulfilled a life time dream of finding employment within the world of flight, sailing and golf. Each position provided him both knowledge and appreciation of each domain. Curtis was an avid sailor and loved his "Shannon Sea." He served on the Crofton Town Council for many years and actively participated in the remodling of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Gambrills, Md. Survivors include his wife, Yvonne (Vonnie) of 42 years; one daughter, Shannon Callaway of Odenton, Md; one sister, Sally Ray of Bridgeville, Del.; sisters-in-law, Deborah Kralick (Werner), Denise Bohonek (Richard); and nephews, Matthew Taylor, Brandon and Brett Bohonek, Matthew Kralick; and niece, Sarah Kralick. Family received friends at the Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road, Bowie, Md., on Monday, June 28, 2010 from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at noon. Interment followed at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville, Md. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harbour School, 1277 Green Holly Drive, Annapolis, Maryland 21409.
