A 25-year-old man was killed and a veteran Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office deputy slightly injured after an incident in the Dennis Street area Tuesday.

Deputy First Class Benjamin Jones, after a fight and fearing for his life, shot Fednel Rhinvil after Rhinvil refused to stop when ordered by the deputy, according to Lt. Tim Robinson of the sheriff’s office.

The fight began at 1:45 a.m. while Jones was patrolling the area, where there had been a threat to shoot at a house on Olivia Street, Robinson said.

When Rhinvil refused to stop, the deputy chased him and stopped him as he tried to climb a fence. Jones was pinned and Rhinvil pulled a gun from his pocket. Jones shot him, Robinson said.

Jones was treated for an injured hand, Robinson said.
