DOVER - Consuelo Valdez Laya, of Dover, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010, at home. She was 79. Mrs. Laya was born Sept. 13, 1930, in San Narciso – Zambales, Philippines, to the late Felixberto Valdez and Julia Villanueva Valdez. She worked in Central Supply Service at Christ Hospital in Jersey City, N.J., retiring in 1990. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Jaime F. Laya in 2009. She is survived by her son, Jaime Laya, Jr., of Ridgefield Park, N.J.; five daughters, Maria Socorro Laya – Smith and her husband Kenneth of New York, N.Y., Maria Theresa Laya of Hackensack, N.J., Maria Leonila Laya – Palanca and her husband Jaime of Dover, Maria Consuelo Laya – Mercado and her husband Glenn of Bogota, N.J., and Maria Divina Gracia Laya of Cliffside Park, N.J.; sisters, Julita Valdez Aguirre of San Jose, Calif., Aurora Valdez Achacoso of White Chester, N.Y., and her special sister-in-law, Virginia Valdez; grandchildren, Joel, Denise, Naeemah, Carmela, Muriel, David, Francisco, Raphael, and Yna; and many cousins, nephews and nieces. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 8:45 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State Street, Dover. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Oblate Apostles of the Two Hearts, 749 Bison Road, Dover, DE 19904.
