Cole: Protect our farmland from further housing development

Posted

I have lived in Delaware for over 50 years. I know that the times are changing, but we also must realize that, with farmers phasing out and the younger generations not going into agriculture, the farmland is being sold to developers.

Yeah, that’s just what we need — more houses, strip malls and storage facilities. We should be utilizing what we have. There are empty houses and buildings throughout the state that can be used.

If they keep building on good farming land, what are we and the animals going to eat?

I feel that, if the farmers cannot afford to work their land or are just unable to keep up as they get older, the state should step up and take action! The state should buy the land and farm it or rent the farmland to someone who can farm it.

Not only are we losing our farmland, but we’re losing our forests.

With more people moving to Delaware, developers are cutting our trees down to make room for houses.

Please save the land that we have left! Without our precious farmland, we will have to depend on other countries for food.

So, the bottom line is, who are we going to depend on, us or them? Protect our land!
