DOVER - Clarence Smith "Smitty" Landskroener, 89, of Dover, died March 19, 2011, at Delaware Hospice, Milford. Smitty was born on Dec. 20, 1921, in Saginaw, Mich., son of the late Clarence and Myrna Landskroener. The family moved to Merchantville, N.J., where he was raised, then to Centreville, Md., in 1946. He served in the Army during World War II. In the 1950s and through the 1960s, he was part owner of Delmarva Sash & Door of Barclay, Md. He later worked for Puritan Chemical Company until his retirement in 1992. Throughout his life, Smitty was involved in his community. In 1954, he was elected to the Centreville Town Council. In 1962, he was elected Chairman of the Democratic Party, Queen Anne's County. He was also active in the Blood Bank of the Eastern Shore in its formative years, a Charter member of the Centreville Lions Club and a well-known participant in their annual musical productions; a member of the American Legion in Centreville, Chestertown and Dover. He was a longtime member of Masonic Lodge AM & FM, where he was honored for 60 years of membership in 2008. After moving to Dover, he became a member of the Elks Club. He was an active member of the Chester River Golf & Country Club and served on its Board of Directors at one time. After moving to Dover, he joined Maple Dale Country Club. At both clubs, he enjoyed the competition and camaraderie of the game. He was an avid golfer at both clubs and enjoyed playing cards at Chester River and in the Card Room of Maple Dale. He loved to hunt and the stories of his time at local hunt clubs in MD are legend. He and Nancy also loved the quiet, peaceful sport of surf fishing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. When at home, he could be found in the kitchen cooking or watching his favorite baseball team the Phillies. Smitty's upbeat spirit and love of people will be missed. He always had a hearty greeting for everyone. He was predeceased by his brother, the Rev. Dr. Peter A. Landskroener of Bristol, R.I. He leaves to mourn him his wife of 19 years, Nancy O.
