SMYRNA - Christine R. McCarty, of Smyrna, and formally of Betterton, Md., died at her home on Sunday Aug. 2, 2009. She was 84. Mrs. McCarty was born in Perryville, Md., The daughter of the late Joseph B. and Lulu Simpkins McDaniel. Mrs. McCarty was a graduate of Perryville High School, Perryville. Most recently she worked as a breakfast ambassador at the Holiday Inn Express in Dover. As well as the Fairfield Inn in Dover. Before moving to the Smyrna area, Mrs. McCarty along with her husband "Mac" owned and operated the Ye Lantern Inn in Betterton, Md., for eight years. Mrs. McCarty was a member of the Betterton United Methodist church where she served as the financial secretary for eight years. She also enjoyed traveling, reading and being involved with numerous Lions Club activities. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Thomas John "Mac" McCarty in 2002; three brothers, Jodie, Harold and Charles McDaniel also predeceased her. She is survived by one son, James L. McCarty of Smyrna; five grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Friends and family may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning at the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St., Millington, Md. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the Still Pond Cemetery, Still Pond, Md. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Clayton Lions Club c/o Sue M. Gwinn, 1908 Vandyke Greenspring Rd. Smyrna, DE 19977.
