Chester C. Coffin

MILFORD - Chester C. Coffin, of Milford, died at home Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012. He was 101. He was born on Aug. 22, 1910, in Milford, son of the late Wm. Potter and Lulu Messick Coffin. He was the last surviving member of the Milford High School class of 1928 and had the distinction of the longest membership in the Avenue United Methodist Church of any current member, having joined the Church in 1921. Mr. Coffin worked mainly in the fields of insurance and accounting and retired from the Marvel Agency of Milford in 1975. During World War II he was an electric welder at Dravo Shipbuilding in Wilmington where ships were built for the U.S. Navy. He was an active 60 year member of the Masonic organizations and presided in many of the bodies. His wife, the former Florence Bullock, died Jan. 9, 1994, one day before their 63rd wedding anniversary. He was also preceded in death by two grandchildren, Joel Felty and Laurel "Micky" Hughes. He is survived by five daughters and two sons-in-law, June Rankin of Camden-Wyoming, Margarette "Peggy" Jones, Carolyn Reed, Elaine Willey and Joshua Willey Jr. and Beverly Stokes and William Stokes Jr., all of Milford; a sister, Helen Skipper of Ridley Park, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call two hours prior. Burial will be held privately.
