Charmaline 'Charm' Kirilla, 89 LEWES - Charmaline "Charm" Kirilla, 89, of Lewes, died peacefully on Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes with her loved ones by her side. Her career spanned four decades during which she served as Director of numerous organizations; co-authored a Nursing School Feasibility Study for George Washington University; and taught English via Radio Broadcasting in Taiwan and, locally, to foreign students. Following retirement in 1978, she volunteered in various charitable organizations, including Delaware Hospice, Beebe Medical Center, American Legion Post#28 Auxiliary, and the Consortium, among others. She was known for her generous contributions to many local organizations. She also authored a collection of memoirs, which is treasured by those who knew and loved her. In 1942, Charmaline and her husband, George M. Kirilla, were named Mr. And Mrs. American at a ceremony in which the Vice President of the United States presented each of them with the U.S. Presidential Distinguished Civilian Service Award for significant contributions to the WWII war effort on America's Home Front; and in 2000, she was recognized via the SDALL Chairman's Honor Award. Charm was predeceased by her husband of 53 years; and is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Charmla and Bill Capanaro of Lewes; three sisters, Mercedes K. Hannum of San Jose, Calif., Patti Cearley of Woodland, Wash., and Debra Puma of Los Gatos, Calif.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
