Charles Warner Shockley, 87 SALISBURY, Md. - Charles Warner Shockley, 87, of Salisbury, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 at his daughter's home in Dover, Del. He was born on Oct. 14, 1922, in Salisbury, the son of the late Joshua Ernest Shockley and Bessie Shockley Pope. "Charlie" was a graduate of Wicomico High School in Salisbury. He married Joan Louise Wharton in 1952, who preceded him in death in 1988. Also preceding him in death was a step-grandson, Carlton Weikel of Salisbury. A lifelong musician and piano tuner, he was manager of Alexander's Music Shop for nearly three decades. Following his retirement he owned and operated his own piano service, tuning and repair business. An accomplished trumpet player, he performed in numerous swing, jazz, dance and big bands throughout his life and also taught trumpet to young people. He served for many years as president and treasurer of Local 44 of the American Federation of Musicians and the Salisbury Federation of Musicians. He was a lifetime member of the Salisbury chapter of the Elks Club and enjoyed golfing with the Maryland Interclub Seniors Golf Association. He loved traveling, especially to Europe, as well as "talking it over" and listening to music with his many friends, and watching his beloved Orioles and (former Baltimore) Colts. A loving father, husband, brother, son and friend, he was a lifelong member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Salisbury. He is survived by a brother, J. Ernest Shockley, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; two sons, Charles Warner Shockley, Jr., and his wife, Brenda Shockley, of Salisbury; Paul Russell Shockley and his wife, Jane Shockley, of Thurmont, Md.; and a daughter, Elizabeth Drew Shockley and her partner Sandra Clark, of Dover, Del. He is also survived by two step-grandchildren, Karen Weikel-Sell of Salisbury, Gary Weikel of Eden; and numerous nieces, nephews and great step-grandchildren. The family wishes to express deepest gratitude to the staff and volunteers of Delaware Hospice for the exceptional care given to Charlie during his final days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Delaware Hospice, Inc., 911 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE, 19901.
