HARRINGTON - Charles Paul Heinen, of Harrington, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, in Milford Memorial Hospital, Bayhealth Medical Center. He was 57. He was born Aug. 14, 1950, in Manhattan, N.Y., the son of the late John and Elsie (Gysells) Heinen. He was USAF retired, serving from 1970 to 1992. During that time, he served during two wars. While serving in the Air Force, he was assigned in the field of Fire Prevention. He was the Chief Arson Investigator for all of the 3rd Air Force Europe while stationed overseas. After returning to Dover, Charles joined the Dover Air Force Commissary where he was Union Steward for the Civil Service workers on the base. For his accomplishments in the field of Fire Prevention, Charles was made a lifetime member of the Dover Air Force Base Fire Department. He also had extensive studies in the engineering field as well. He also worked part time in an electronics shop in Dover. He loved spending time with his family and especially enjoyed his grandchildren, who he adored. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, John and Richard Heinen and a sister, Debbie Heinen. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ruth E. Heinen; two sons and a daughter-in-law, William T. Heinen and J. Morgan and Renee Heinen, all of Harrington; a daughter and son-in-law, Loretta and Steve Hansen, of Stewartville, Minn; a sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Nick Ferrera of Florida; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Philip and Ann Heinen of Georgia and James Allman, of Dover; nine grandchildren, Tiffany and Victoria Heinen of Harrington, James (Jimmy) King, stationed overseas in the U.S. Navy, Aricc, Jason and Jerrianna Hansen, all of Stewartville, Minn., Anna May Slaughter of Dover, Cathy Slaughter and Mathew Heinen, both of Harrington; and a host of nieces and nephews from Georgia, New Jersey and Florida. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford, where friends may call on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial with Military Honors will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Patriots Way, Millsboro.
