Charles Littleton Smith, III (Chip), 55 MILFORD - Charles Littleton Smith, III (Chip) died at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford on July 28, 2009. He was 55. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles L. Smith, Jr. "Charlie" or "Chip" is survived by his loving wife, Betty Williams Smith; his mother, Ruth Lippard Smith of Asheville, N.C.; a step-daughter, Sherri Scott and son-in-law, Eric Scott of Greenwood; two sisters, Marianne Micks and her husband Hank of Richmond, Va., and Thames Robinson and her husband Daniel of Grant, Ala.; two granddaughters, Taylor and Laney Scott; his maternal aunts, Nancy Lalley and Sara Ann Hoyt, both of Asheville, N.C.; and his faithful border collie, Molly. He was born and raised in Fredericksburg, Va., and became a private pilot of single engine aircraft in his senior year of high school. His hobby as a young man was British motor cars, a love he shared with his father. Charlie was a 1976 graduate of Virginia Tech with a Master of Science degree in education and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. After teaching some, he entered the private sector workforce with Texas Instruments and moved to Baltimore, Md. There he continued studies at Johns Hopkins University. An avid railroad enthusiast, he volunteered at the B&O Railroad Museum as an engineer. A job opportunity with Playtex brought him to Dover, where he later became plant manager for Hanesbrands, Inc. Spanette Operations. Charlie was head coach and instrumental in the development of the Dover Youth Lacrosse club and was inducted into the Delaware Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2005. He was an active member of the United States Coast Guard Auxilary 12-03-Detachment in Seaford, and the Blue Hen Sail and Power Squadron in Dover. He was a member of the Classic Yacht Club of America in Grasonville, Md., and was the Immediate Past Commodore of Seaford's Nanticoke River Yacht Club. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Christ Church on State and Water streets, Dover. A reception to immediately follow at Christ Church Parish Hall, adjacent to the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Mid-Atlantic Border Collie Rescue, 24420 Chestertown Rd., Chestertown, MD 21620.
