DOVER - Carol Ann Cleary of Dover passed away Sunday, February 2, 2014 after a brief stay at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital. She was 78. Mrs. Cleary was born April 28, 1935 in Mansfield, Mass. to the late Duncan A. Ferguson and Ida Mae Melbourne Ferguson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, John Cleary; and sister, Elaine (Abby) Haughton. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Richard J. Cleary (Rit) of Dover; sons, Richard James Cleary, Jr. and his wife Joanne of Ellington, Conn., William Cleary of Bethlehem, Pa. and Gary Ferguson of Providence, R.I.; brother, Duncan Ferguson (Bud) of Providence, R.I.; grandchildren, Marin and Mike Cleary, Bryan and Olivia Cleary and Pat Ferguson; and great grandchildren, Pasquale and Samantha Ferguson. Carol was an avid Boston sports fan, who loved watching the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. She was a determined debater with Rit and grandson Mike and their love of the New York Yankees. She was supported in her love of her Boston teams by her grandson Bryan. She loved to bowl and watch her kids participate in youth sports. Her son John was an avid musician, and she loved to watch him play his drums. She was known for her loud whistle and her sons learned early in life to get home when they heard it. She loved playing card games with penny stakes. She enjoyed family time at the family beach house in Mattapoisett, Mass. While there, she enjoyed playing bocchi and collecting beach glass with her brother Bud and sister Abby. Her favorite food was lobster and she enjoyed family trips back to New England for a lobster cookout with family and friends. Later on in life, Carol came to enjoy having a crab feast with her family. In 58 years of marriage to an Army officer, she travelled around the world, living in such places as Japan, Thailand, Okinawa, and Berlin, Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Several times, upon returning from a Far East assignment, the family would drive across the U.S., getting the opportunity to see more of the country, which wasn't always easy with three growing boys. Often, she was responsible for coordinating the moves, ensuring household goods and children were safely delivered to the next military base. She quickly learned the local customs, one time she got out of the family car in Thailand and stopped traffic so her family car could get through. Once, while stationed in Ft. Jackson, S.C., she was invited on a local TV show to teach people how to make Thai silk flowers. After her sons were grown, she worked in military hospitals in Berlin, Germany and Ft. Belvoir, Va. Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at the Fort Meyers Chapel in Arlington, Va., with interment following in Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements by Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover. Letters of condolences may be sent and guest book signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
