Carles Clay Messick Jr.

Carles Clay Messick Jr., 80 SMYRNA - Carles Clay Messick Jr., of Smyrna, died peacefully at home on Wednesday March 24, 2010. He was 80. Mr. Messick was born Aug. 22, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of the late Carles Clay Messick Sr. and Reita Elizabeth Mills. Mr. Messick was a veteran of the United States Navy. He retired after 27 years as a truck driver for Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., where he earned the Two Million Safe Miles Reward. After retirement, Carles continued to drive for Power Electronics until September of 2009. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association. Carles was a devoted family man and a patriot. He enjoyed collecting scale model 18 wheel trucks, was a competitive card and board game player, and loved to cook Sunday dinners for his entire family. He is survived by his loving wife, Lavina A. Messick; six sons, Carles Clay Messick, III and his wife Deborah, Richard Wayne Messick, Daniel Brian Messick and his wife Patty, John Anthony Messick and his wife Virginia, Donald Irwin Messick and his wife Pam, and William Rodney Messick and his wife Vanessa; three daughters, Yvonne Renee Hengst and her husband Robert, Patricia Ellen Russell and her husband Steven, and Lavina Ann Slavin and her husband Andy; 28 grandchildren, including Brandy L. Mason, who was raised by Carles and Lavina; three step grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Nelson Edward Mesick and his wife Sue; and three sisters, Ann Synder, Gloria Mae Cahall, and Betty Jane Haley. Funeral services will be noon, Tuesday, March 30, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 310 Clark Farm Road, Smyrna, Delaware, where friends may call at 11 a.m. Burial will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Saints Home healthcare, LLC., 3985 N. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901. Letters of condolence may be sent by visiting www.fariesfuneralhome.com.
