Carl Nelson Short, 85

MILFORD - Carl Nelson Short, of Milford, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2008, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 85.

He was born on Nov. 8, 1922, in Milford, son of the late Carl and Alice M. (Lindale) Short.

Mr. Short was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country from 1942 to 1945 in the European Theater during World War II.

He was employed by Fisher Appliances in Milford for 40 years, retiring in 1984.

Mr. Short joined the Milford Kiwanis Club in 1962.

He served in all offices of the club in the 11th Division, including lieutenant governor in 1972 and as secretary for 34 years.

Mr. Short was a director of the Kiwanis Club Variety Show held at the Schine Theater in Milford from 1965 to 1969.

Local talent was utilized for this annual event.

He was also actively involved in the Kiwanis Terrific Kids Program at Banneker and Lulu Ross elementary schools for four years, a program which rewarded school children for showing exemplary conduct at school.

Mr. Short had 36 years of perfect attendance with the club.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 3, where he managed the Monday night bingo at the building for 25 years, and was a member of the Blue Hen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6483 in Milford.

He was a charter member of the Milford Police Department Senior Patrol and was active with this unit for five years.

Mr. Short gave of his time willingly as a volunteer also. He delivered meals for the Milford Senior Center for 20 years and delivered mail to patients at Milford Memorial Hospital on a weekly basis.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret H. "Peggy" Short; two daughters, Kathleen E. Russell and her special friend, Dr. Roger Alexander, both of Milford, and Carol L. Knight and her husband Gary of Camden; and two granddaughters, Sara E. Russell and Emily L. Russell.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call two hours prior.

Burial with military honors will be held at Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.

Instead of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Delaware Veterans Home Fund, 100 Delaware Veterans Drive, Milford, DE 19963.
