CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge-South Dorchester High School presented its commencement ceremony on May 23. Principal W. David Bromwell acted as the master of ceremonies for C-SD’s graduating class of 137 individuals and their families in the school gym. “I want you all to be better than me,” Principal Bromwell told the assembled graduates, “I want you to be better than your parents, I want you to be better than your teachers.” Of the class itself, he said that the most prominent reaction he gets of the class is that “you’re nice. You’re just really nice kids! Principal Bromwell backed up his statement by reminding the students of an old quote, partially attributed to newspaper columnist Walter Winchell, who said, “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.’ And that’s what I wish for you.” Mr. Bromwell also pointed out the total scholarship dollars given to the graduates of 2017 totaled $3,059,954, and that the seven year total of graduate scholarships was now $17,318,755. Trevor Dale Goodwin, the second-ranking student in the class of 2016, gave the Salutatory Address, and Class President Jacob Leroy Morris introduced CMSgt. Mervin E. Dennis (Retired) who delivered the commencement address. Sgt. Dennis is a graduate of Cambridge-South Dorchester from the class of 1984. Valedictorian for the class of 2017 is Jonathan William Brohawn, who gave a brief address and thanked the school and administrators. The Cambridge-South Dorchester High School Concert Choir sang two songs, Gone, Gone, Gone, and Humble and Kind. The C-SDHS Concert Band played The Star Spangled Banner and Pomp and Circumstance. The weather being rainy outside, the students moved to the lobby of the school for their traditional cap toss.
