Dontre’ King Jr. felt the joy of accomplishment and anticipation as he waited with his friends for the beginning of Cambridge-South Dorchester High School’s Class of 2018 Commencement Ceremony on May 31.[/caption] CAMBRIDGE — “Just remember, you will always be a Cambridge-South Dorchester Viking,” Co-Salutatorian Emily Brohawn said during the school’s Class of 2018 Commencement Ceremony on Thursday. After experiencing the joy, pomp and circumstance of the event, there is little doubt that the grads could ever forget. Ms. Brohawn shared salutatorian duties with Hunter Kane, who encouraged his classmates to overcome difficulties. “All of us have had to face challenges,” he said, adding that in recent years, he had not only lost three grandparents, but also the use of one eye – not that any of it kept him from reaching his goals. “Something as big as losing half of your vision doesn’t have to stop you,” he said. Senior Class President Keysha Torres Ortiz introduced Rear Admiral Sara A. Joyner, who, in addition to an extensive list of professional accomplishments in the U.S. Navy, is a member of the C-SD Class of 1985. RDML Joyner said she did remember her time at C-SD and her own graduation, when she decided to take on a difficult challenge. That first move, she said, was critical. “Decisions have power,” she said. “Not making a decision is still a decision.” Once the choice is made and the goal is set, it comes down to determination. “Overall, passion and grit will get you where you want to go,” RDML Joyner said. “Just being born and raised in Dorchester County means you have grit.” Valedictorian Leah Krotee spoke about moving to the area, and missing her previous home. She said she had thought more about what she was leaving behind, rather than looking forward. But then she realized that change brings opportunities. “For that, I am grateful,” Ms. Krotee said. She finished her remarks with special words for the graduates’ parents. “We appreciate you, more than you could ever know,” she said. Class of 2018 officers were President Keysha Torres Ortiz, Vice President Chyna Wongus, Secretary Leah Krotee, Treasurer Shania Shockley and Spirit Chair Me Aziah Wilson. Class Advisor was Emily Hawthorne, Senior Counselor was Kristi King. Class Quote was from Harriet Tubman, who said, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” Class colors were coral, periwinkle and silver.
