CAMBRIDGE - The Cambridge Police Department will hold its first Clean-Up Day in the 900 block of Pine Street beginning at 9 a.m. Sept. 24. Lunch will be served, followed by a celebration of “L.O.V.E is the Answer Day,” a day conceived by A.J. Ali to help improve relations between police and people of color nationwide, a statement from the CPD said.

Melvin Russell, an ambassador of the “L.O.V.E.” program, has been hired as consultant for CPD.

“Mr. Melvin Russell is an asset to this community and the police department,” Chief Justin Todd said. “He is assisting the police department in bridging the gap and building trust between the Cambridge Police and the citizens of Cambridge.”

Mr. Russell has vast experience in law enforcement, the statement said. He was promoted in 2007 to the position of lieutenant for the Eastern District of Baltimore.

In the position, he is credited with turning the worst midnight patrol shift in the city into the best in three months and was promoted to major of the Eastern District 11 months later. In July 2016, Russell was appointed chief of the Community Collaboration Division in Baltimore. He will use this experience to aid Cambridge in an effort to curb violent crime, the statement said.

“I enjoy being a peacemaker, connecting with people, and spreading unity and love throughout communities. I look forward to engaging with the people of Cambridge and building a stronger community,” Mr. Russell said.

“L.O.V.E. is the Answer Day” will also feature local artist Miriam Moran, who will assist in creating a chalk street mural. Throughout the day, CPD and members of the Gun Violence Reduction Taskforce will be bringing the community together to find out what their major concerns are so that they can be addressed, the statement said.
