CAMBRIDGE — On Friday, Cambridge Mayor Victoria Jackson–Stanley announced her campaign for re-election to the city’s top office. Her statement follows:

“The past 12 years have seen drastic change in the City of Cambridge. When I became mayor in 2009, the city was facing the biggest deficit the city had experienced in modern history. It was a tough time for us. Under my leadership, we made some tough decisions for the betterment of the city’s financial health and we also became very creative in finding new ways to fund much-needed projects.

“In the years since, we have seen great growth in our downtown and there has been new industry that decided to call Cambridge home. We have ramped up our code enforcement in an effort to insure our citizens have safe and healthy homes. Over the next four years, with the right leadership, we will see a change to our waterfront and significant upgrades to the Maple Leaf District.

“Today, I am announcing that I am running for re-election to the office of Mayor. I have the experience to lead this community into its next phase and I have the relationships, in the city, county, and in Annapolis that are essential to continuing to move Cambridge forward.

Mayor Jackson–Stanley is a born-and-raised native of Cambridge and a graduate of Cambridge High School. She is the first African-American female elected as Mayor of Cambridge. She is the recipient of the 2015 William Donald Schaefer Award from the Comptroller of Maryland and numerous citations, recognitions, and awards.

She graduated from Salisbury State College, with a Bachelor of Social Work degree, and has a Master of Social Work degree from Howard University School of Social Work. She retired after more than 40 years with the State of Maryland, where she spent her career working with various Departments of Social Services on the Eastern Shore.
