Caesar Rodney schools to close for a day during Firefly

CAMDEN — Students in the Caesar Rodney School District will not attend school during the Friday of Firefly Music Festival, officials said this week.

The decision was made "out of concern over the impact of the Fire Fly Festival on our bus contractors and other potential issues that our students and their families may experience," according to a message posted to the district's website.

The district moved an in-service day originally scheduled for Sept. 13 to Sept. 24 to accommodate the change. Students will now attend school Sept. 13 and not on Sept. 24.

The schedule mirrors a decision the Capital School District made in August.

Capital opted to conduct two days of remote learning Sept. 23-24 during the festival.

“Anyone who lives in Dover understands that when Firefly concerts start, the traffic is impossible,” Dr. Vilicia Cade, Capital's superintendent, said last month. “Now that Firefly will be taking place when schools are in session, we do not want to take the chance of having any of our students stranded because of gridlock or traffic delays.”

Firefly is slated to return to the Woodlands of Dover on Sept. 23-26, a change from its usual mid-June schedule.
