Caesar Rodney advances to DIAA state semis on last-match pin

Walter Toomer’s third-period pin in the night’s final match gave No. 4 Caesar Rodney High a dramatic 33-31 victory over No.5 William Penn in the DIAA Division I dual-meet wrestling state quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The Colonials had run off 10 straight points to take a 31-27 advantage into the 215-pound bout.

Toomer registered his fall in 4:30 to send the Riders (10-3) to Saturday’s semifinals where they will face top-seeded Sussex Central (13-0) at 2 p.m. at Smyrna.

Also winning by pin for CR were Cole Moffett (120 pounds) and Trevor Copes (132). Moffett’s fall came in just 17 seconds.

The two squads split their 14 matches with the Riders picking up bonus points on five of their seven individual victories.

CR lost to Henlopen North champion Sussex Central, 34-26, on Feb. 7.

Sussex Central 55, Sussex Tech 14: The No. 1 Golden Knights collected five pins in winning the first eight individual bouts before earning the quarterfinal victory.

Austen Decker (106) and Talan Savage (138) both had falls in under 40 seconds for Sussex Central (13-0).

The Knights’ other pins came from Drake Rogers (113), Evan Cordrey (132), John Rovillard (144) and Justin Craig.

The No. 8 Ravens (9-9) got a second-period pin from Dustin Elliott (150).

Cape Henlopen 34, Smyrna 27: The No. 3 Vikings’ needed a first-period pin from Patrick Donahue in the last match to seal their quarterfinal win over the No. 6 Eagles.

Cape Henlopen (16-4) gets a semifinal matchup with No. 2 Salesianum (7-4) on Saturday at Smyrna at 2 p.m.

A third-period pin from Teagan Gratkowski (190) pulled the Eagles within 28-27 of Cape with one match left. But Donahue answered with a fall in 1:46 to close out the victory.

Cape Henlopen also got pins from Austin Guerrieri (106) and Nicolas Walker (144).

Smyrna (9-9) added pins from Warren Coates (126) and Brandon West (157).

Salesianum 46, Milford 30: The No. 2 Sals opened up a 46-6 lead before posting the quarterfinal victory.

The No. 7 Buccaneers (12-5) finished the match with pins from Jami White (165),Brian Seward (175), Jordan Curry (190) and Greg Lockett (215). Hunter Durham (15) also won by fall for Milford.

Division II

Lake Forest 59, Tower Hill 18: The third-seeded Spartans took the first eight individual bouts before advancing to the semifinals of the Division II tournament.

Lake Forest (15-4) will face No. 2 Delaware Military (9-0) on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Smyrna in the semis.

The Spartans had four pins on Wednesday, getting falls from Aaron Ratledge (113), Mason Farrell (126), Ian Nance (144) and Nurrideen Ahmad-Statts (157).
Laurel 45, Caravel 33: The No. 4 Bulldogs built a 39-18 lead before posting the quarterfinal victory.

On Saturday, Laurel (11-4) will take on top-seeded Saint Mark’s (7-4) at 2 p.m. at Smyrna in the semifinals.

Kade Wooten (113) had a 24-second pin for the Bulldogs. Also winning bay fall for Laurel were Joseph Baynard (285), Macario Perez-Soriano (120), Connor Smith (132), Ezekiel O`Hara (144) and Stanley Peete (157).
